But you’re still talking about yourself…

And it’s hurting your speech’s referability!

Before you start panicking about a total rewrite… and before you take an ax to those personal stories… let’s look at some gentle ways to reduce your use of the word “I.”

I have four fixes in mind…


Fix #1: Use the “WE” Test

This first one is easy to do for a very quick and effective change.  It works especially well if the story you are telling relates directly to a problem the audience is facing.

Instead of saying,
